My first thought when the opportunity to attend Bill's two day Advanced 4WD training course was: What could I possibly learn for two days?
I was wrong.
Not only am I a better 4WD driver and spotter, but now I can say that I've learned from the best. Bill's course covered the basics of 4WD training, of course, but there was so much more information delivered in 20+ contact hours, I'm sure I won't adequately cover the topics in this quick review.
Bill travels with spare parts, and spares for the spares, and likely a spare for your vehicle. A large part of his course is 4WD mechanical knowledge for all popular 4WD brands. Jeeps are built different than Toyotas, and Bill covers that information, and just about anything else you're curious about.
Let's talk about recovery!
I've watched Bill's Getting Unstuck DVD at least a dozen times, it's a great refresher before a big event. In person = much better!
While our group never really got stuck (likely due to expert spotting from Bill), the discussions during recovery lessons were invaluable. We all learned a great deal about how to calmly assess the situation, make a plan, then implement that plan to fix the situation.
Wheeling with a BB4WA group also allowed me to see how other vehicles operate and wheel. Our group included a Land Rover, classic Range Rover, 3rd Gen 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, and of course my Tundra. Seeing how different vehicles with varying levels of modifications tackle the same obstacles was a great way to learn about other platforms.
As the largest vehicle in the group, I opted to run tailgunner and take my time getting through each obstacle. With expert spotting & guidance from a legend, my confidence in the TCT Explorer and its ability to handle tough terrain is vastly improved. I also fee like I have a better grasp on how to help others enjoy the off-road hobby.
Bill also covers more then 4x4 driving & recovery. His lessons on map & compass, backcountry navigation, rig preparation & packing, and basic survival scenarios are beneficial to virtually everyone. There is a reason US Special Forces and many other professional organizations (including Toyota USA) employ Bill to teach their courses.
