Eddie was really excited to share information about his products and while I was there, a customer happened to come up to the Rad Rubber booth to buy another set of the engine splash guards for his FJ Cruiser. While he was there, the customer leaned over to let me know that these were “the best things he’s ever bought.” I gave a smile of appreciation and so began my quest for information on these engine splash guards.
I was competing in the 2019 Rebelle Rally in a few months and knew these would be incredibly beneficial, especially through the some of the terrain I knew I’d be driving in during the competition—lots of dust, dirt, sand, and possibly even mud. I love Toyotas and my FJ Cruiser even more, but we all know the flimsy, construction-paper-like material OEM splash guards the FJ Cruisers originally come with. The guards eventually disintegrate leaving small remnants delicately dangling for dear life from the clips and obviously not providing much protection. They’ve become eye sores more than anything.
I tested out the Rad Rubber Designs Heavy Duty Engine Splash Guards for the FJ Cruiser made from Nitrile rubber and found them easy to install—just a little arm contortion and wrist strength to pop out the old clips. Nitrile rubber has superior strength and is more resistant than natural rubber to oils and acids making this material a great option. Because of these qualities, it is often used to make fuel and oil handling hoses, seals, and grommets in the automotive and aeronautical industries. I felt pretty confident they would hold up better than the originals on my FJ.
The package contains a set of two splash guards, one set per fender well, and clips for installation. The most difficult part I found was popping out the old clips without them flying near my eyes, so after popping out the first clip, I decided it might be best to wear safety glasses—better safe than sorry. Once I got the first guard on and popped in the first clip, it was easy-peasy the rest of way. I realized after installing the first guard, there is a little extra slack which allows for extra strength and durability. The splash guards held up well against the elements and varying terrain of Nevada and California during the Rebelle Rally and protected my engine and various components in the engine bay. No tearing, punctures, or wear, other than some good old fashion dust and dirt on them.
I am by no means “mechanically inclined”, but the instructions on installing the Rad Rubber splash guards were super easy and required no more effort than just making sure you had all the parts and getting yourself organized, and of course, safety glasses if you like having your eyeballs.
Eddie was great to work with and really helpful. I’m all about supporting family-owned companies involved in the off roading world and Eddie works hard to provide the best products and customer service.
